Angels and guns? Stranger pairings might be imagined, but when they’re done in stained glass the visuals are startling. It’s a combination cooked up by Ann Porter and Patricia Barkley, two artists with a shared vision. A wry take on traditional religious icons (which they also love to design), the results are provocative – but mostly, just witty and engaging.

It’s not surprising that other subjects also get the makeover treatment in stained glass. Images as diverse as the legendary “see no evil” monkey trio (skulls, anyone?) and hand-puppet shadowplay aren’t immune to the artists’ touch. From popular folklore to biker chic, the driving force is creativity, with a passion to re-examine and re-imagine the familiar. And do it all beautifully in art glass.
